With about 120 employees, National Institute of Biology (NIB) is the third largest Research institution for Life Sciences in Slovenia. The institute was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia in 1960. Two main activities of the institute has been and continues to be basic, developmental and applicative research in the fields of ecology, biodiversity, biotechnology, biophysics, biomedicine and system biology and transfer of the knowledge to society. Researchers from the Department of organisms and ecosystem research (EKOS), who coordinate the project LIFE NATURAVIVA work with diverse animal groups, from vertebrates to invertebrates, living on the land and in freshwaters, in the surface and subterranean ecosystems, with ecological role from predators to pollinators and decomposers. As ecologists, we have a deep understanding about the importance of biodiversity in all kind of ecosystems and about its influence on human well-being. With this extensive knowledge, we can greatly contribute to the high quality of information used and disseminated in the project activities and outputs.

As the leading partner, NIB has taken upon the role of project coordination and leadership and is actively participating in all core activities of the project. Specifically, we will be involved in education about biodiversity on the higher-levels of education. We will introduce topics, such as importance of biodiversity of pollinators, in the agricultural sector and amongst the general public (biodiversity-friendly gardens) and involve in promotion of rich biodiversity in Slovenia, as well as educate about threats to biodiversity and importance of nature conservation.

LUTRA, Institute for Conservation of Natural Heritage is a private, non-profit making and independent environmental non-governmental organization devoted exclusively to nature conservation. It is active continuously from the year 1998. Its sphere of activity is nature conservation and research work of freshwater and riparian ecosystems. The otter, also a flagship species of the organization, is used for education work with different groups of young people, for information and public awareness actions aiming at protection and preservation of biodiversity. By exploring the life and distribution of species in nature, we try to better understand its role and interdependence of species in natural aquatic ecosystems. Equipped with knowledge we can do more to preserve the species and its natural environment.

Nature is our teacher and life partner. Everything that we learn about it and learn from it, we try to approach the widest circle of people in a variety of ways. We are aware that nature conservation is necessary because human species has powerfully interfered in it. Nevertheless, nature has enormous defensive and self-renewing power. We are looking for a fragile equilibrium between the two extremes. The LIFE NATURAVIVA project is also our “child”. We take care of the administrative arrangement of the project; you will meet us in numerous communication activities, in the preparation of a book and a film about the biodiversity of Slovenia, and especially at events where nature intertwines with culture and art.

The main goal and purpose of the Triglav National Park is to preserve outstanding natural and cultural values, protect the autochthonous plant and animal world, eco-systems and the characteristics of the inanimate world. The TNP is a public body competent for the only Slovenian national park management. It comprehensively manages the protected area of the Triglav National Park (83.982 ha or 4 % of the Slovenian territory). Within this project the TNP plans activities for target groups in the field of education, tourism, agriculture and the general public. In cooperation with partners, the park will organize numerous events, exhibitions, workshops, prepare various publications, digital tools will be upgraded – including the establishment of a pedagogical platform of the TNP and an animated film. We will upgrade information points in elementary schools in the area of park municipalities. We will organize summer natural camps for primary school pupils and numerous excursions and workshops for the tourist and agricultural sectors. As one of the oldest protected areas in the Alps, the TNP has an extensive experience of project management, therefore it can contribute significantly to the successful implementation of the project concerned.

Mountain peaks with breathtaking views, colorful meadows, intermittent Lake Cerknica, natural bridges of Rakov Škocjan, mystical underground world, crystal clear streams and magical forests – all located on 222 km2 of the Notranjska Regional Park. The Park was established in 2002 in order to preserve, protect and explore the natural and cultural values of the area. It features a high degree of conserved natural habitats, numerous natural monuments, remarkable biodiversity, and recognizable cultural landscape. The area is home to the smallest snail, the strongest bear and everything in between. Life here, with its diversity has always attracted science and nature lovers, but every time it offers something new, something that has not been seen yet. We are aware that such a variety in a relatively small area is something special, but at the same time we want to present the importance of this biodiversity to wider public. The LIFE NATURAVIVA project seems the right way for us to do it. As part of the project, we will organize open-air movies, where visitors will be able to watch movies about biodiversity. Photographic exhibitions will be organized, and in the end, we will endeavor to show people the diversity of life that surrounds us.

The Kozjansko Regional Park, a region in eastern Slovenia, is one of the oldest and largest protected areas in Slovenia. It represents a mosaic of the pre-Alpine Posavje Mountain Range, hills, and plains along the river Sotla. The high degree of biodiversity places Kozjansko Park among the most important nature protection in Slovenia and Europe with majority of the park belonging to the European important special protection areas NATURA 2000. Since 2010, the Kozjansko region with Obsotelje have enjoyed the status of a biosphere reserve under the protection of UNESCO (MAB programme – Man and Biosphere). The Kozjansko Apple from the meadow orchards has become a symbol of environmentalism, sustainability, preservation of the heritage, health, and recognition of the Kozjansko Regional Park protected area.

Within the project ” LIFE NATURAVIVA”, we will establish a 2 km long interactive castle educational trail about biodiversity, publish a publication with interesting environmental stories, set up an exhibition of naturalistic outdoor pictures, organize an open-air summer castle cinema with movies with nature conservation topics, perform lectures, educational days about natural sciences and promotion of biodiversity at various events.

Goričko Nature Park Public Institute established by the Slovenian government in 2003 is a public non-profit organization financed by Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. Goričko NP PI is managing Goričko Nature Park area and Natura 2000 site Goričko in way of sustainable development with protection of biodiversity and cultural landscape, public awareness, schoolchildren education and with participation in decision making processes on the local level and cross border cooperation with Raab Nature Park and Őrség National Park. Special attention is paid to the implementation of nature conservation measures for conservation of motley meadows, meadow orchards, hedges, relict vegetation and waters. The cultural landscape, preserved due to its borderline and remoteness, is a tiny dissected area for many living creatures. The picturesqueness originates from the cultivation of land, adapted to the surface, underground structure and climate influences. An important project achievement will be an outdoor traveling exhibition. Within the project, we will also prepare a plan for the interpretation of nature of the KPG, which will include the campaign “Raznoživ ogračel na Goričkon”, days in nature for students of all ages, study tours and inviting people to discover the knowledge of the natural diversity where the art of life is hidden.

The University Botanical Garden is a small piece of nature in the center of Ljubljana, furthermore it is the oldest Slovenian cultural, scientific and educational institution. It was founded in 1810, at the time of the Illyrian Provinces, as a “Garden of native flora” and as a department of the Central School. Since 1920, the Garden has been a part of the University of Ljubljana and since 1991, the existing Garden enjoys the protection as a monument of landscape gardening. The principal activities of the University Botanic Garden Ljubljana are research, pedagogical-didactic activities and expanding the horticultural knowledge. It has a collection of cca 5000 plant species and therefore also represents a green oasis in the city with high plant biodiversity. We are exploring and cultivating plants that are endangered in nature or are extinct in Slovenia. Also one of the most interesting garden plants, Fleischmann’s parsnip, has been extinct in nature and is preserved only in the garden. It also has an in-depth knowledge of plant conservation which is intricately linked with conservation of biodiversity. The University Botanical Garden manages 2 ha dry meadow in Ljubljana where they protect in-situ some endangered native plant species

Within the project we will explore and present the diversity of plants and pollinators in the garden and on dry meadows, we will set up a new educational path that will address the diversity and importance of biodiversity on dry meadows, and complement our educational role among school children and the general public.
